Inter-Departmental Cross-Cultural Skills

Business Challenge

Improve the Cross-Cultural Communication Skills of the Chinese Project Managers to facilitate better teamwork with German colleagues.

Training Needs Analysis (TNA)

The Inter-Cultural training focused on cultural dimensions such as low/high context, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, I/we orientation, task/relationship orientation and sense of time. We discovered some useful insights into the participants experience with Germans by conducting a pre-training written survey with them. We discovered the participants were all Chinese and had varying levels of English. So we provided a German trainer, Klaus that could speak fluent Mandarin and created bi-lingual training content.

Training Solution

The Cross-Cultural Communication Skills training covered skills development focus topics such as goals of cross-cultural communication, western and Chinese cultural differences, patterns and cultural standards, effective communication with western colleagues, dealing with mis-communication, leadership styles, planning and decision making, communication styles in meetings, voicing your opinion and dealing with feedback. Our facilitator had a deep cultural sensitivity and was a perfect fit since he was German and spoke both German and Chinese. The workshop received good feedback from the participants and senior management.
